The Belem was ordered on December 23, 1895 by Denis CROUAN et fils at the Nantes DUBIGEON shipyard. Launched on JUNE 10, 1896, it was intended for trade with the West Indies and for a long time transported cocoa powder for the MEUNIER chocolate factory.

Sold in 1914 to the Duke of Westminster, it underwent various transformations, was resold and renamed FANTOM II and Giorgio Cini. The Caisse d’Epargne bought it from the Italians in 1977 and donated it to the BELEM Foundation which transformed it into a training boat. Currently based in Nantes, its home port.
