• HMS Surprise was the name the Royal Navy gave to the Frencf Navy’s corvette “UNITÉ”. She was built in 1794 in le Havre and armed by 24 x 8 pounder long guns. She was captured by HMS Inconstant in 1796 in Bone and renamed HMS Surprise.
• HMS Surprised was re-classed by the British as a 28 gun sixt-rate frigate.
• Thanks to the recapture in 1799 of HMS HERMIONE, the ship was famous.
